Why Visit Lucerne

Lucerne's history dates to 750 AD. The medieval Altstadt is defined by frescoed facades and the Chapel Bridge, Europe's oldest of its kind. Its octagonal Water Tower, a former archive and treasury, is one of the top attractions in Lucerne.

Set on Lake Lucerne, the city is flanked by Mount Pilatus (2,128m) and Rigi. Ascend Pilatus on the world's steepest cogwheel railway (48% gradient) for panoramic views. A lake cruise on a historic paddle steamer is essential when visiting Lucerne.

When asked what is Lucerne famous for, many point to its cuisine. Try Chügelipastete, a savory veal puff pastry dish. The weekly markets by the Reuss offer fresh regional cheese and produce. Also sample local Kirsch, a potent cherry brandy.

Top of the World!

Going up Mount Pilatus was the highlight. The cable car ride itself offers amazing views. Once at the top, the panoramic scenery of the Alps is just massive. It feels like you're on top of the world. It's well worth the trip from the city.

Beautiful Old Town

Lucerne's Old Town is so well-preserved with its painted facades and narrow cobblestone streets. It was great just to wander without a map and see what you could find. There are also lots of little shops and cafes to pop into when it gets cold.

Magical Winter Visit

Visited in the winter and the city was magical with a dusting of snow. The cozy cafes were perfect for warming up. I tried some Luzerner Lebkuchen, a local gingerbread, which was delicious. It was a very quiet and beautiful trip.

So Easy to Get Around

What a wonderfully walkable city. It's compact enough that you can see most of the main sights on foot. The Lion Monument was much more moving in person than in pictures. Getting around was very easy and stress-free.
